U.S Flights – New Mobile Security Measures
Travelers bound for the US are being warned to bring their electronic devices fully charged to the airport or risk having to leave them behind. The US Transporta- tion Security Administration (TSA) has updated its statement on the enhanced security measures that will be implemented at overseas airports with direct flights to the US. In its latest statement, the TSA warns that during security examina- tions, officials may ask owners of electronic devices, including cell- phones, to switch their devices on. “Powerless devices will not be per- mitted on board the aircraft,” the statement cautions. Calls for in- creased security measures come as the result of new sophisticated bombs, which authorities fear may go undetected at airports. The TSA has yet to produce the list of coun- tries that will be expected to intro- duce these new measures. However, the Department for Transport (Dft) in the UK has confirmed that it will be complying with these re- strictions, issuing advice for travel- ers to the US to make sure their elec- tronic devices are charged before they travel. In spite of these height- ened measures, the department does not foresee significant hassles for travelers, commenting that “the majority of passengers should not experience significant disruption”. Acsa reports that South Africa has not yet received a directive to im- plement increased measures. The company issued a statement saying: “We would like to assure our customers and stakeholders that the current security measures at Acsa’s airports are adequate and
comply with international stand- ards. The company will increase security measures at its airports should it receive a directive to do so from the South African Civil Avia- tion Authority.”

BA to launch 5 new routes from Gatwick
British Airways an- nounced that it will launch five new routes from Gatwick, London, in 2015. BA will begin flights to Ca- gliari, Sardinia; Crete and Rhodes, Greece and Bodrum and Dalaman, Turkey from April next year.
Lufthansa offers upgrades from business to first class
The airline is giving business-class travelers the opportunity to upgrade to first class on selected long-haul flights, for €500 (R7 240) per segment. The offer is valid for travel between July 20 and October 25 on selected routes, per segment, to and from Frankfurt, Newark, Washington, Detroit, Den- ver, Tokyo-Narita, Osaka and Tehe- ran. Special conditions apply on the Washington route. The seat reserva- tion only includes the first-class seat. It does not include first-class service, such as speciality meals, extra baggage space or entry to the Lufthansa first-class lounges. The conditions of the chosen business- class fare, including the Miles & More mileage credit, will remain unchanged.

Singapore Airlines to operate A380 on Beijing Route
The Airline will operate its A380 on its Beijing route from August 1. The A380 also ser- vices Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frank- furt, London, Los Angeles, Mel- bourne, Mumbai, New Delhi, New York, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, Narita and Zurich.
BA codeshare adds 170 destinations to network
The codeshare services include 37 international routes and 11 domestic routes in Italy from Vueling’s Rome Fiumicino Airport. Some new routes on offer through the codeshare in- clude Heathrow to Bilbao and La Coruña, Cardiff to Malaga and Ali- cante, and Edinburgh to Barcelona.
