Ebola outbreak in Guinea spreading across borders

West Africa has been on high alert as the Ebola outbreak in Guinea has spread to Liberia and is threatening to cross the borders to Sierra Leone. So far at least 86 cases and 62 deaths have been recorded across Guinea and 5 deaths have been reported in Liberia. Ebola haemorrhagic fever is a severe viral disease with a mortality rate of 90%. The virus is spread by direct contact with infected blood or tissue, but not by casual contact. It therefore poses a low risk to travelers to the region, which is why the World Health Organization (WHO) has not issued any travel or trade restrictions to Guinea. There are no special precautions or directives for commercial flights, passengers or crew departing on flights bound for Guinea or returning from Guinea.
