UK – Gatwick International Airport Plan Strike

Gatwick airport workers will take part in three different strikes over the winter period – a total of six days as part of a dispute over pay, up to 250 staff members who assist passengers and disabled travelers will take part in the strike that will take place on the 21st and 23rd of December affecting Christmas Eve travel.

UAE – New Medication Rule

Travellers heading to the UAE with medication will now need to fill in a new form when travelling. This means that any passengers with controlled or semi-controlled medication can take up to a month of the prescription. Controlled substances in Dubai include substances such as codeine, while semi-controlled drugs can include antidepressants. Passengers can take up to three months of non-controlled medication which is any medicine that does not require a prescription. The form can be found for free at www.mohap.gov.ae where information such as passport number, doctor’s prescription and other details of the holiday are inputted.

Emirates Offer Home Check-In Service

Emirates is offering to ease travel time through its home check-in Service by collecting baggage from travellers’ hotels or homes in Dubai prior to departure. Passengers flying out of Dubai on Emirates can book the service 12-48 hours before departure. Home check-in agents will come to the traveller’s home, hotel or office where they will complete a security check, conduct check-in formalities and issue boarding passes, weigh luggage, tag and transport the luggage to be delivered straight to the correct flight. Emirates also offers a home delivery service in Dubai where luggage is retrieved cleared at customs and delivered to the customer’s home or hotel following arrival.

Cemair to Launch ELS-PLZ Flight

CemAir will launch flights between East London and Port Elizabeth from the 14th of January 2019 providing passengers with more choice as currently SAA is the only airline that operates the route. Two CemAir flights will operate daily Monday to Friday.

DRC – Ebola Outbreak

The Ebola outbreak in north-eastern DRC which has already killed more than 200 people, is expected to last until mid-2019.

Australia – Airline Testing Mobile Biometric

Qantas flyers can use their smartphone as their passport in a biometric trial launched. Participants store their passport details and photos in Qantas’ facial-recognition app. Then their passport data is matched to their face via cameras at the airport. Qantas is conducting the trial at Brisbane’s airport through mid December for flights to Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Rome – Introduce Permanent Measures

Rome has introduced permanent measures to tackle behaviour considered inappropriate on the streets of the capital from eating and drinking outdoors to swimming in fountain. The measures includes a permanent ban on pub crawls and the public consumption of alcohol in glass containers. Furthermore these measure prohibit costumed “centurions” from charging tourists for souvenir photos. The measures include a crackdown on eating and drinking outdoors in areas of historical importance such as the Spanish Steps and laws against swimming in the city’s fountains have been made permanent. Rome’s police now have the power to issue ‘daspos’ – a ban on individuals from returning to the area in which they caused an offence – from 48 hours to 60 days.
