Brussels Airport Closed Following Explosions

Belgian authorities have advised all travellers to restrict their movements following the terror attacks that took place in Brussels on the 22nd of March. Two explosions occurred in the departures hall of Brussels National Airport in Zaventem shortly after 08h00 (09h00 SA time) Another explosion occurred in the Maelbeek metro station later that afternoon. Tighter security measures are expected which will cause delays. The terror threat of the entire country has been raised to level four a serious and imminent threat.

Yellow Fever Outbreak

A yellow fever epidemic in Angola has killed at least 250 people since the end of December 2015 and continues to spread. More than 900 suspected cases are turning up in Luanda hospitals each day. Luanda remains the worst-hit area, with nine of every 10 deaths registered in the city over the last days. Authorities launched a mass vaccination campaign in February and the government urged residents to sterilise stagnant water before drinking it. There is no specific treatment for yellow fever, a viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes and found in tropical regions of Africa and Latin America’s Amazon region.

Namibia – New Visa Regulations

South African business travellers going to Namibia are required to apply for a visa at the Namibian High Commission in Pretoria as part of the country’s new visa regulations. The cost of the visa is R80 for the handling fees and R390 for the visa itself. The processing time is between two and three working days.( the processing time can change without prior notice)

British Airways Drops Unaccompanied Minor Service

British Airways has scrapped its unaccompanied minor service, meaning that children who are under 12 will no longer be able to fly on their own. This decision applies to all flights across BA’s network, except those operated by Comair. Nine out of ten young people aged over 12 years who travel alone with us do so without making use of the Service. The airline will still accompany children over 12 years but those aged 11 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 years or over.

Hundreds of Flights Cancelled Due To ATC Strike

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled due to strikes by French air traffic controllers. The industrial action will continue today and further disruption is expected. The French Civil Aviation Authority has told all airlines to downsize their flight schedules to and from Paris Orly, Lyon, Marseille and Nice. As well as affecting flights to and from and within France, the action is also impacting other flights from the UK which cross French air space. Travellers are advised to check the status of their flight in advance.

Cemair Launches Joburg – George Flights

Cemair will operate flights between Johannesburg and George from the 18th of March. The airline said it was testing the popularity of the route following high demand for the flights with the upcoming school holidays.

Nigeria – Fuel Shortage to End Soon

Nigeria’s junior oil minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu has promised the current fuel crisis in the country would soon be over. The ministers claims that the fuel scarcity problem will be over by the second week of April. Nigeria has been dealing with a fuel shortage in recent months often leading to flights delays.

Kenya Airways Boosts Joburg Flights

KENYA Airways will add four flights a week between Johannesburg and Nairobi, increasing the service to four daily flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, Effective from the 2nd of April.

Airline Ups Flights to Capture JNB-MRU Market

Air Austral will add a third weekly flight between Johannesburg and Réunion from the 30th of October in a bid to increase onward traffic to Mauritius.
